Going to Rome and not seeing the Pope is a popular aphorism that could almost be adapted to Greek reality, translating itself as “Going to Athens and not seeing the changing of the guard”…
Syntagma Square is one of the most emblematic places in Athens as it is where the Greek parliament is housed. It is an elegant building in a classic style that invokes the best of the cultural traditions that gave life to the different cultures of the western world. Opposite this, we have the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that is permanently honored by the presidential guard (evzones). It is an elite body, now almost converted into a beautiful aesthetic ornament that attracts the attention of tourists. The soldiers maintain a rigid and highly ritualized posture, being able to resist the high temperatures that, in summer, for example, often reach 40ºC. The high point is the changing of the guard in which two new soldiers replace the previous ones, in a true synchronized dance of great harmony. I was fortunate enough to capture the moment when the building and the soldiers converge in such a symmetry that suggests that no line is out of place.
